The new 2018 Bentley Continental GT is longer than the car it replaces, with more space between its front and rear axles, which equates to more interior space for passengers and luggage. There is also Bentley Dynamic Ride, which adjusts the roll of the car and is supposed to improve handling. There are four driving modes: Sport, Comfort, Bentley and Custom. Bentley is what the manufacturer considers the ultimate configuration to drive.
In terms of redesign, Bentley is not the kind of builder to suggest radical changes. At least, not so far ahead in the 2018 Bentley Continental GT. Just look at the second generation outgoing models versus the original coupe. The redesign focused on more refined details than anything else. But things have changed dramatically and the third generation of the 2018 Bentley Continental GT is a huge improvement. And it’s beautiful to watch too. It is not surprising that the new Grand Tourer is largely based on the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept car. Of course, it is not as sporty as the production car, it clearly lacks the position of supercar, but it has many stylistic features. In the front, the grid is almost identical, so it is much wider and located a little lower in the fascia. The nose has also been lowered. The usual round headlights with smaller units at the corners are framed by the huge grille, but both have been redesigned and have different proportions. They have the latest Matrix LED technology and a unique design. Inspired by the finest cut glass lenses, the internal surfaces are transparent with well defined edges that capture light like a diamond. The result is similar to an illuminated jewel, giving the 2018 Bentley Continental GT an elegant look. The bumper is very familiar, with a wider central opening flanked by taller side vents. This configuration is similar to the outgoing model, but the side entrances are now as high as those of the bumper. Viewed from the side, the new 2018 Bentley Continental GT looks longer and shorter. The engine hood and lowered nose contribute to this sensation, but the modified posture is also due to the fact that the front wheels were mounted 5.3 inches later. This results in a longer wheelbase, resulting in a seemingly longer body. But, although size and shape in general feel familiar, there are some noticeable changes. For starters, traditional ventilation in the front fender no longer exists. Instead, Bentley added an outlet just above the side skirts, integrated with the chrome rim located in the arches of the rear wheels. Later ones also feel more muscular, as in the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept. The 21 inch wheels are standard and can be offered in two versions. Optional 22 inch lightweight forged wheels are available as well as a hand finished option with a polished, twisted finish. At the rear, the new 2018 Bentley Continental GT is a new car. From the beginning of the introduction of the identification plate, Bentley has created a unique design of taillights. Also using LED technology, the lamps now have the shape of ellipses that mimic the shape of the exhaust pipes. The new taillights also work on the trunk lid for the first time. The latter has also been redesigned, with a wider opening, which should facilitate the loading of large suitcases into the trunk. And it goes without saying that the Continental finally has a modern trunk lid and not a lid that would have in a conventional washing machine. The redesigned bumper still looks like the previous one, but the recess on the plate now rests closer to the ground and interrupts the chrome strip. I like the effect it creates. At the bottom, the oval tailpipes are a little larger and no longer look like a sloping figure on eight. In total, the new rear is a significant departure from the traditional design of the 2018 Bentley Continental GT. And although I can not decide if I like it or not, I must admit that it is unique and fresh. In addition to these new design changes, the body of the 2018 Bentley Continental GT is also composed of different materials. Now fully aluminum, the body was created with Super Formed technology, a technique working with aluminum heated to 500 degrees Celsius (932 Fahrenheit) that allows designers to generate more complex lines and better defined. The 2018 Bentley Continental GT is actually the first production car to be fully bodied thanks to the Super Formed process. The new body materials also save over 80 kg on the previous car. Customers can choose from 17 exterior paints, with a limited range of shades available at launch. Of course, more colors can be obtained via the custom Mulliner division.
Unlike the exterior, the interior looks a lot like the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept. The design is still closely related to the outgoing model, but Bentley has added so many new features that we are basically considering a new design. One could say that the most impressive feature is the new infotainment screen. Called Bentley Rotary Display, this is a 12.3 inch touch screen located in a three sided unit that rotates in the center console. When the car is not in use, there does not seem to be a screen in the center of the dashboard, the wood veneer flowing continuously through the dashboard. However, when you press the engine start button, the center column plate slides forward and rotates to display the configurable screen. The third side of the rotating screen has three analog dials indicating the outside temperature, a compass and a stopwatch. So you can opt for a simple table or an elegant and old table. This is an essential feature of the industry, as McLaren’s somewhat similar functionality is used in the dashboard. Speaking of which, Conti’s new group of instruments is more modern than ever. With 3D LED lights, the dials look analog, while the large screen in the center displays high resolution images and information. The steering wheel has also been redesigned and equipped with small keys on both radios. The new coupe also features new veneers, such as Koa, a wood rarely used in cars. A double leaf option is also available, and Bentley says that more than 10 square meters of wood are used in each car. This is not necessarily something to boast about, because of the problems we face due to massive deforestation, but society says that every inch of wood is sustainably obtained. The center console matches the lower fascia, but it can be specified in a new finish inspired by the mechanical surface of the best Swiss automatic watches, Côtes de Genève. This surface, also the first in the sector, is machined in an aluminum 0.6 mm thick. It is created by machining from one side to the other to create a linear pattern. Each row is 5 mm wide and is machined at an angle to give a three dimensional finish. Many surfaces are wrapped in fine leather with contrasting stitching. This is not unusual in a Bentley, but the firm boasts of this new quilt technique called “Diamond Diamond”. It offers the effect of a quilted and floating surface and is also soft to the touch. You have the choice of 15 colors of packing before sending it to Mulliner, which offers an infinity of options. Not surprisingly, the 20 position adjustable seats feature standard heating, cooling and massaging features, while Apple CarPlay, real time traffic and the private eCall system for emergency services are just some of the practical features available in the cabin. You can also choose between three audio systems. The standard system includes 10 speakers and 650 watts, but the optional Bang & Olufsen unit comes with 1500 watts, a 16 speaker system and lighted speaker grilles. Finally, a 2200 watt, 18 speaker Naim system with front seat low level active transducers and eight sound modes will transform the 2018 Bentley Continental GT into a concert hall.
At launch, the 2018 Bentley Continental GT is only available with a 6.0 liter W12 gasoline engine, which Bentley describes as the most advanced engine of its kind in the world. The power has increased 44bhp over the previous car, to 626bhp, and the 2018 Bentley Continental GT can accelerate to 62 mph in 3.7 to 0.8 s faster than the outgoing model W12. As a reference, this solution is also faster than most versions of the Porsche 911. The W12 will be the only model available for sale, but a cheaper variant of the 4.0 liter V8 will follow later: an engine shared with the existing Porsche Panamera Turbo.
The pricing information for the new model is not yet available, but it is expected that you will get some sort of price increase. With the outbound retail model starting at $ 214,600, the third generation of 2018 Bentley Continental GT could start around $ 220,000. On the other hand, the V-8 model, which will be published in 2018, should always be less than $ 200,000.
