The weekend is an American singer, rapper, and producer known most famously by his stage name of Abel Tesfayee. He started his musical career in 2020, releasing several songs on YouTube under the name “Abel Tesfayee.” The Internet's largest ever community dedicated to music, YouTube, was soon full of his music as well as several other artists' work including Kanye West, Avicii, Rihanna, and even Britney Spears.
In June 2020, the first “The Weeknd” single was released, and fans immediately took notice. The single featured a sample of the Weeknd's voice and was originally intended as a joke between him and his record label, Astralwerks. When the single failed to chart, it was clear that this young artist was on the right track. His next single, “Earn It” was released in August 2020, but like “Earn It,” it failed to chart as well.
A few months later, “The Weeknd” was featured in a profile in the New York Post where he was described as a young artist from Toronto who was making a name for himself in the music industry. The following year, he released his second album, The Darker Side. The album failed to chart, but he has continued to impress with each new release.
One of The weekend's biggest hits is called “The Hills,” which features Daft Punk's robot. Although this isn't his only appearance in the band, it is definitely one of the most popular. Other popular hits are Starboy, Take Me Home Tonight, and Earn It.
For the past three years, The Weeknd has received numerous awards for his music. Most notably, he was nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Album for 2020 with the single “Earn It.” Many other albums have also been nominated and won Grammys over his long career, but none of them have reached the heights of Earn It.
Despite his impressive resume, The Weeknd is no longer a solo artist. He has a group called the Wild Oats Band along with producers The Neptunes, Noah “40” Shebib, and Ali Shaari, as well as the backing band The National.
The Weeknd recently teamed up with Justin Bieber for the single “Love Yourself.” This song also had been nominated for a Grammy, and The Weeknd is hoping to win it for his own album.
Because of his extensive musical resume, The Weeknd is also used in commercials for products such as Pepsi and Budweiser. His music is even featured in some of the advertisements. Other famous songs that have been featured in commercials are Ed Sheeran's “Shape of You,” Sam Smith's “Stay With Me,” Beyonce Knowles' “Halo,” and J.Lo's “Good Girl.”
While the Weeknd is currently signed to The Neptunes, he also has a deal with Sony BMG Records where he is scheduled to release his first album with J.Lo. His music can also be heard on a video game called Rock Band.
