Many people today consider themselves very clever and would love to be able to make their smartphone 'selfie' seem as amateur as possible. In other words, they'd love to make it seem that they are posing for a group photo, rather than faking their appearance through the use of a smartphone camera. While this is an excellent idea, it is important to realise that in many cases, it is simply impossible. This is because no matter how hard you try, something is always going to get in your way. Therefore, it is best not to focus too much on the way you look, but instead, focus on how you act. In other words, let us examine this phenomenon at close quarters, and see whether or not it applies to you, and your smartphone.
If you have ever been stood in front of a mirror with your smartphone camera protruding from your face, then you will probably be familiar with the feelings of nausea which begin to set in. You begin to feel that some horrible image is emerging from somewhere, and perhaps most importantly, you also start to feel self-conscious about the fact that everybody else in the room, including the person standing right next to you, is also viewing the scene from exactly the same angle. For many of us, this is where the perception of 'selfie' comes into play. The moment you realise that everyone else in the room has eyes set upon you, your internal monologue begins to explain that perhaps it wasn't your imagination that created that image, but rather that you were looking down the camera lens as if you were a fish looking up at the water. Yes, it is true that you cannot escape the temptation of looking downwards, but rather, work out a way to ensure that you never look downwards when you are taking photographs!
In order to avoid looking downwards, another suggestion is to hold your handset in such a manner that your hand is almost parallel with the ground. It is a strange sensation to have your hands parallel to the ground, but try it. You will find that the effect is not all that attractive on your face or in your arms, for two reasons. First, your whole frame will be in focus, instead of just your hands; and second, you will end up giving the impression that you are frowning. This is something that you would never dream of when you hold a camera phone in your normal position. So, hold your handset in this manner, and you will have two very good reasons for keeping your hands parallel to the ground.
Try taking a photograph whilst holding a smartphone in your other hand. Then again, you will find that you should have already looked down at the camera when you started taking photographs. This means that you will need to look down to take your photograph, and it is an awkward position to hold the handset in. It will do nothing to add to the overall quality of the photograph. Look down at the phone, even slightly down, and you will discover that you 'don't look down' when taking the photograph, even though your hands are now parallel to the ground.
Try the opposite position. Place your wrist in front of the camera and make sure it does not rest on the phone. Your whole body will be in focus, and you will automatically look down. This will give you the impression that you are looking downwards, towards the ground, and you won't have to squint when taking the photograph. This position also means that the camera will not fall off the table or off the screen, which can happen if you are holding the handset too low.
Hold your handset in a neutral position and move it about as well. If you are holding the phone in a more average position, you should not have to make any adjustments when trying to keep it steady on your foreheads, backsides, or any other typical place. If you have a thin forehand, make sure that you keep your thumb pointing upwards, as this is where all your grip strength will come from. Squat your elbows, press your palms into the phone's surface, or get a pillow to rest your hands on whilst you take the photo.
Hold the smartphone in a relaxed position. Many of the fancy mobile phones on the market now come with some form of adjustable height. Some even allow you to hold them at an angle so that your hand rests on the back. You should not be able to pinch the sides of the phone in order to get a bigger picture, or tap the screen to launch your camera. The screen should be flat and touch-screen as well, and all white. You don't want to be stressing about getting that perfect shot because you held your handset too tight!
Remember, all smartphones have digital cameras built in. You don't have to use one. If you feel that you could do better, then go and buy a professional camera. If you want to get the most out of your smartphone without having to pay the price of a professional photographer, then take your own snapshots instead.
