EDD debit cards are a type of credit card that offers many benefits to those who use them. While they do have their limitations, they offer the same convenience and security to cardholders as any regular card. The biggest benefit of these is that they work just like any other debit card. Any money you put on the card is deducted from your bank account. If you spend more than you have, you will be charged an overdraft fee.
You can avoid this fee by having a guaranteed withdrawal limit. You should have this pre-arranged. To prevent being overdrawn, you will usually have to make timely deposit amounts into your account. If your transactions are delayed, some companies may charge you an over-limit fee. Be sure to clarify that transactions would qualify for an over-limit fee before making your final decision.
An important feature of this type of bank card is the ability to dispute any fraudulent transactions that may occur. If you feel that a transaction did not go through, you can inform the bank immediately and have the transaction denied. Your decision can either be reviewed by the bank manager or the financial management team. If the transaction was approved, the bank may decide to reverse the decision and issue you a new one.
You should know that not all banks to issue this type of card. Only those that issue ATM debit cards and/or Serve Now cards are able to process EDD debit transactions. The reason for this is because of the nature of the card itself. An ATM is not a location that is used constantly. Therefore, it is not practical to keep a large number of ATMs around the country.
Instead, most banks issue Visa or MasterCard debit cards that can be used everywhere Visa and MasterCard are accepted. As with a regular Visa or MasterCard, you can load funds into an EDD debit card online through the internet or a bank's website. A photo identification is not required for this type of transaction. You also have the option to load funds from an ATM if that facility is near your location. There is no need to carry around a bulky physical card everywhere you go.
Some benefits of accessing your funds from an EDD debit account include the ability to make tax-free purchases. There is also no need to provide identification when making purchases. In addition to these benefits, a California Employment Development Department debit deposit agreement allows you to make electronic deposits and e-statements to a bank account. You can also use your debit account for tuition, housing, child care, transportation and health insurance. This will allow you to access money whenever you need it.
To take advantage of EDD direct deposit funds, you must enroll in the EDD program. Once enrolled, you will receive a Replacement Card, which is good for one year. The Replacement Card can be used as an electronic checkbook, which allows you to complete all transactions electronically.
“EDD debit cards can replace most cash and offer more security than a traditional bank account,” said Yuseff, a UC Berkeley assistant professor of electronic media. “I was very pleased to learn about EDD and its many benefits. I would certainly recommend it to anyone facing layoff, unemployment or other hardships.” Said Yuseff, who is also . . . . . . an adjunct professor at UC Santa Barbara's Global campuses who does research on food insecurity, youth and single parent issues.
Replacing cash can be a complicated task. For one, many employers require a large amount of money upfront for payroll. If your employer does not provide this money, you will have to set up an alternative method of making payments, such as a check or cash. EDD transactions eliminate the need to handle these types of payments because the funds are available immediately. This also eliminates any possibility for fraud, as the funds are deposited into your new card. Transactions do incur some costs, as described below.
Electronic funds processing (EFC) is designed to reduce the possibility of fraud. EFC allows banks to use mathematical algorithms to ensure that only authorized individuals are able to access funds in your new debit card account. In theory, a hacker could cause enough damage to the database to render the entire system useless. In practice, banks have found that fewer than 0.5 percent of all transactions are fraudulent.
To combat possible fraudulent charges, you should consult with your bank. If you feel that you are about to become a victim of ECD, you should request that your account be closed so that you are not susceptible to future ECD. You should also ask your bank to stop making ECD transactions to your new credit card account once you are employed full-time and are receiving your unemployment benefits. Your statement will be able to let you know if you are already enrolled in a program that enables you to obtain one or more unemployed benefits.
