Pinterest is an online community that allows you to share, discuss and create art. Pinterest board members are also a group of curators who offer unique, handpicked “asures” for you to purchase. There's nothing more fun than visiting a new place and discovering something totally unexpected. With the Pinterest board, you can invite friends, families and colleagues to join the fun by posting pictures of your own home or a special place you've traveled to.
I'm a huge fan of travel, so I was thrilled when my friend Joanna invited me to her home-cation swap in late April. I've been to a lot of second homes and almost always have an eye for the interior and choosing the perfect color palette for each location. It's important that my color choices compliment my home's overall color scheme (having the same flooring colors in a different room makes the home seem larger and gives an unkempt feeling). Joanna and I immediately knew that we were on to something great with her inviting Pinterest board and inviting Pinterest friends to join.
I'm not usually a huge fan of neutral colors but when I saw neutral Pinterest wall art I had to have a closer look. The neutral palette includes pastel colors like yellow, light blue and green, and earthy hues such as beige, brown and taupe. The pictures on Joanna's wall were vibrant and full of interesting detail. I especially love the one of the baby grand piano (complete with music and photos!). This is a fantastic example of using bold colors to create a warm and inviting environment.
I was inspired to use neutral wall color palettes when I visited a friend's house that was painted in neutral colors. Her walls were painted in earth toned hue with very few accents. I liked how she communicated the feeling of warmth and calmness that you get by staying true to the neutral tone. My own neutral style is similar to Joanna's. I tend to blend bold colors with darker neutrals for a more dynamic look.
I'm not a huge fan of painting my walls in traditional neutral tones but I do think it's okay to do so if it helps to differentiate my room from other rooms. One of the challenges of living in an apartment is that your decor choices need to reflect the fact that there are only so many things that can go in a given space. If you choose a bold piece of artwork or wall color, there's no way anyone else could live in that particular home. You wouldn't want to live in a house where all the furniture was shabby and sparse, would you?
Using a bold wall color is also appropriate if you want to add an energetic punch to a room. A black and white canvas would be perfect for this. I've seen some very gorgeous black and white art in Joanna's Pinterest board. It really gives you a nice contrast between the two colors. Another option would be to use a color wheel, which I think is quite gorgeous.
There is also a trend to decorate with only neutral color palettes. You can find plenty of inspiration on the various Pinterest boards dedicated to homes decorated in this manner. If you haven't tried it yourself, I recommend looking at some of the recent projects by talented painters such as Autumn Leaves by Autumn Lee, which I featured on my blog. I also encourage you to check out Autumn Leaves on Etsy and other similar sites.
My personal favorite is still the cute kids wall art that is posted all over the place. There are several adorable girls doing what girls do, making silly faces at each other. I like to take a break from reality for a minute and pretend they're in front of a very beautiful and colorful world. It's perfect for relaxing and unwinding. Why not add some neutral wallpaper to your home to make it feel more inviting?
