If you're anything like me, you're sick and tired of hearing about Amazon's customer service. If you're anything like me, you probably have hundreds of refund requests and many more complaints from angry customers over the years. So I decided to write an article to help people understand what the Amazon Customer Service folks are up against, so they can make it easier for them to deal with the Amazon BSC and solve their issues.

It all starts with having a good plan. In the early days of customer service, there was no such thing as planned delivery. The vendor or reseller would get in touch with the customer and give them an estimate of when the product would be available for purchase. If there were any problems, the customer would just wait until the date came and call them to complain. There were tons of unhappy customers that had to deal with this scenario and it was a nightmare for both sides.

So what did the end consumer do? He wrote an angry email and wrote a letter to Amazon demanding that they send someone out to deal with his problem. Amazon would just fire their customer, so the vendor was not likely to ship the defective product until the next promised date. So what did the customer do? He called them.

That's when things started to go south real fast. It turned out that there was no Amazon department specifically dealing with refund requests. Amazon was not really organized. There were only two employees that dealt with calls and complaints, and they did not really do a very good job of checking whether or not the caller was legitimate. And even if they did, they didn't know how to handle it. It became apparent to me that Amazon needed to do some organizational changes if they wanted to improve their customer service.

They needed to outfit their internal departments with better training so that they would know how to handle any customer complaint, no matter how bogus the problem might be. They also needed to put systems in place that would automatically prioritize their customers' problems, and then escalate the problem to a higher-ups if an appropriate solution wasn't already in place. Amazon is not a real business. It's an online retail store that sells books and other products.

When I complained about the way Amazon handled my problem, I got an answer from an Amazon spokesman. According to this guy, “we look at every complaint we get and try to solve the problem as quickly as possible. If the . . . . . . customer is unable to solve the problem with the product, we ask for the address and contact details so that we can contact the customer for follow-up guidance. Sometimes, it may take more than one attempt to fix the problem.” I found this rather hard to believe, because after all, how many online retail stores give the customer the same treatment when a problem arises. The customer gets the same treatment no matter where he goes.

It certainly sounds like Amazon doesn't want to pay anyone to resolve their problem, especially if they're the cause of the problem. I was dumbfounded. After going through that whole experience myself, I've come to this conclusion: Amazon doesn't want to solve problems, they just want to get more money.

If you want great customer service at an online retail store, you have to go above and beyond what you're used to seeing at those other places. That's just the way it is. However, if you're willing to deal with it and learn from it, you'll save a lot of money in the end.
