Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal seem to be the last thing on the minds of NBA fans. As great as Kobe is, and as respected as Shaq is, they are the two biggest personalities on the team and have led the way for their respective teams. They represent what is best about basketball and there seems to be nothing wrong with that. However, they have been the focal point of NBA debates for the past few years.
What is there to say about Shaq that hasn't already been said by all of the big questions? He's a great shooter and he's also one of the most intense competitors you will ever see. And no player has matched Shaq in terms of dominance on both ends of the floor. He's also a very good rebounder and a great passer. But it isn't just his physical ability that defines him as the best ever. He's also a very smart player, someone who knows how to use his skills to his advantage and play an above average sport.
When Shaq left the Los Angeles Lakers he left the fans and his team in shock. Many of them blamed him for taking the team to the promised land and not giving them what they needed to make the playoffs or make a deep run in the NBA. But as Shaq pointed out, that wasn't the fault of the organization. Instead, it was the fault of his personality and how he played his role on the team. So then what is Kobe's fault? Was it his personality? Sure it was, but did it lead to the team being a great one?
Kobe Bryant and Shaq are very different players. Kobe's game relies on shooting the ball and scoring in the low post and on the right wing. He also plays solid defense and rebounds well. Shaq however, is a great rebounder and passer, a true center who can make every shot look easy. While Shaq has made every jumper look easy, Kobe has missed some, like most young shooters do and is known for missing big shots. Sometimes it really looks like Shaq is going to miss and he takes a bad drop, like almost every other player in the league.
On the other hand, Shaq is known for his athleticism, speed and toughness and is a great rebounder and passer. His defensive ability is also very underrated, but again, I think this is due to his personality. He can take over games with his physical attributes and become a dominant force on the court with his rebounding and passing ability.
So now we know that there is more to this debate than meets the eye. Both Kobe and Shaq are great on the floor and have been for years. I don't think either one of them will ever come off as the best ever, but it is interesting to see how much debate there is and how the debate rages on.
