“The Yellow Wallpaper,” by American author Charlotte Gilman, originally appeared in The New England Review, a magazine printed from mostly New England states. In this short story, Gilman presents the narrator as an exasperated old woman who lives in her own Yellow Wallpaper. Her voice is that of a southern belle who has passed her prime. It is one of her very best short stories.
“The Yellow Wallpaper,” like so many other things of interest about Charlotte Gilman's work, starts with a bang. You know, the kind you would hear at the beginning of a gun fight. A young man is walking down the street and a gun is fired. The young man crumples to the ground, dead. Police arrive minutes later, find no evidence of a crime and the case drops cold.
A few days later a new body is found on the lawn. This time it has a bullet hole through its head. The police still don't know who committed the crime, and the local newspaper decides to publish the discovery. The next day, they publish a full page banner that says: “The Yellow Wallpaper Was White!”
That's the story of the beginning of this classic tale. But then the book takes off and the Yellow Wallpaper becomes a major player in the plot. The Yellow Wallpaper, along with a whole series of related vignettes, helps tell the story of the colorful south, its culture and its way of life. Charlotte Gilman writes about food, flowers, and places. She draws pictures and puts words to her descriptions.
The Yellow Wallpaper was published just as the Panic began. The media blamed the wealthy for the rise in prices of real estate. Charlotte Gilman points out that there is a certain amount of blame to go around. So in this book, she shares her expertise on the many signs that foreclosures are imminent and how you can prepare to save your home.
I particularly enjoyed the part where Gilman draws an attention-grabbing cartoon of a financially bankrupt couple riding a roller coaster, with the narration stating that they are living the life of a pauper. In the next panel, we learn that the couple is traveling to Florida for the weekend, as they attempt to pay off their mortgage and improve their credit. This little book tells a beautiful and humorous story about how the foreclosure crisis is changing the way we live.
This is just one part of “The Charlotte Gilman Yellow Wallpaper.” You will also receive a free book of the same name and e-book on “The Great American Decline” by top economists. Both books will provide you with a great deal of information on how you can successfully manage your finances and avoid the pitfalls that come along. My favorite thing about “The Charlotte Gilman Yellow Wallpaper” was the little things that she included in her wall art. Things like hangi pictures, origami, and even small paintings all incorporated into the story.
In conclusion, “The Charlotte Gilman Yellow Wallpaper” series is entertaining, informative, and has some great designs of wallpaper for your home. If you enjoy books and real estate, you will enjoy “The Charlotte Gilman Collection.” If you're looking for a fun and interesting book to read about the financial crisis, “The Great American Decline” will surely get you thinking. I enjoyed reading “The Great American Decline” and found myself pondering different aspects of life. The book makes you think outside of the box and think about ways you can get out of debt and stay out of debt. It also makes you think about the importance of home equity when planning for the future and building wealth.
As you can probably tell by now, I'm a huge “the color blue” fan. “The Charlotte Gilman Yellow Wallpaper” was another reason why I had to purchase this book. I'm not real estate type person, but I know what it's like to own a home and appreciate beautiful things. This book definitely inspired me to take a look at some of the homes in the Charlotte area and see what they were painted with.
Bottom line, “The Charlotte Gilman Yellow Wallpaper” is not your run-of-the-mill home decoration book. It's a quick read, interesting, and even includes some recipes the author includes with her paintings. If you have an interest in decorating or painting your home, you'll love “The Charlotte Gilman Yellow Wallpaper.” It's a little different than most home decoration books but it's still a very good read.
