“The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a humorous short story written in New England during the late nineteenth century. It's considered an important early example of American feminist writing for its portrayal of a positive vision of women's health and politics in the late nineteenth century. In the story, a young woman named Martha “Mama” Gilman is sent to a nursing home to help care for the aging father. However, a strict and domineering matriarch orders that everyone must get on board the train called the Lincoln. When a young woman named Lucy escapes from the Lincoln, she overhears a conversation in which the matriarch discusses the abuse that has been taking place at the nursing home.
As the story unfolds, one can't help but wonder if there was wallpaper on the walls of the nursery where this scene happened. Was it yellow, or red? In fact, the wallpaper may not have been wallpaper at all – it may have simply been a white or beige poster taped across the ceiling that was held up by two strips of staples. The poster, like most other posters of the time, featured an image of a woman. That poster would have been called “the Yellow Wallpaper.”
Some people today think that it might have been the Lacey twins who created the poster. But this isn't necessarily true. Anna Maynard, a younger sister of the Lacy twins, did write a song called “The Yellow Wallpaper,” and that song may have inspired the wallpaper itself. It's possible that Maynard's sister helped paint the wall. When was the yellow wallpaper written?
This wallpaper wasn't the only thing in the nursery that had a connection to Anna Maynard and her sisters. A closet, or wardrobe door, may have also been inspired by the Yellow Wallpaper. There's one word of historical note here: the Yellow Wallpaper was created in 1490, long before most of the paintings that we know of were created. By the time the Lacy twins were born, most of the paintings we know of were created during the Golden Age of European art.
So, when was the yellow wallpaper written? historians say that it's unlikely. There's nothing about the painting itself, that would suggest it. Historians say that it's more likely that the writing on the wallpaper came from something else, or was a creation of the twins themselves.
The most popular theory, according to Anna Maynard and her sister, is that the Yellow Wallpaper was simply the product of what was going on in their home at the time. The twins loved nature and often showed this through their artwork. It's likely that the Yellow Wallpaper was simply the name of the flower they loved or what they called the petals of an orange tree that their mother had clipped out of a tree branch when she moved into their new home.
